I'm not a big fan of the cake challenge shows on Food Network and other channels.
To me, true creativity takes time and finesse. And though there are some incredible cakes turned out by the contestants, imagine what could have been if time constraints and other stressful limitations hadn't encumbered those artists.
There's a pretty important birthday coming up, belonging to an extremely important person in my life, and I'm planning on presenting said person with an awesome birthday cake. But I've been kind of “meh” over the selections of local cakes.
My mom has always been artistic. For well over the past 30-plus years, she has been decorating cakes on a personal and professional basis. Every now and again, I've been fortunate enough to help her in some of her endeavors.
Flashback to the early '90s. A family friend was celebrating a birthday. He was a Coors Light drinker. My mom had the idea to make a Coors Light-themed cake.
Mom's idea centered around making the cake look like a swimming pool with a Coors Light can painted on the bottom of the pool. When finished, the cake appeared to be a swimming pool, surrounded by bikini-clad ladies and a diving board.
That was just one of many such creative cakes we embarked on, and now I have an idea for that special someone's birthday cake that makes the Coors Light cake pale in comparison.
It makes me wonder what kind of imaginative cakes locals have received for their special days. Has anyone had anything along the lines of the armadillo in “Steel Magnolias”? I'd love to see it and share with readers.
When it comes to the cake I'm about to tackle, of course I'll be enlisting the talents of mom, putting those cake bosses to shame.
