TEA party today in Salas Park

Saturday, November 21, 2009 5:37 AM PST

Lodi Citizens in Action, in conjunction with TEA Party Patriots, is hosting a rally to bring awareness to local farmers today at Salas Park from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Today's rally is part of a 15-day tour that covers 40 cities to support farmers in California who lost their farms when the federal government restricted water pumping to protect the Delta Smelt.

"People are welcome to express their views on anything," said Kim Parigoris, chair of the Lodi citizens in Action. "The main theme is plight of Central Valley farmers."

Parigoris said they would also be taking collections for Packed with Pride, a program that sends packages to troops stationed overseas.

Salas Park is located at 2001 S. Stockton St., south of Kettleman Lane.

Elementary board sets organizational meeting

Among other things, this week the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District set Dec. 9 as its annual organizational meeting. At that time, a new board president will be chosen from among the current trustees.

Also at last Wednesday's regular meeting, trustees heard a report on community pastors on premises as mentors.

Terry Metzger, principal and Galt Community of Character Coalition member, also recognized Galt citizens for the November character trait of responsibility. They included resident Angel Morgan and the organization, Galt Citizens Assisting in Police Services.

In closed session, trustees were scheduled to hold their annual review of Superintendent Karen Schauer, but there was nothing to report out of closed session.

Authorities say a pilot was killed when his small plane crashed in Northern California near the Nevada border.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says a single-engine Cessna 182 left Susanville for Lodi on Friday afternoon. The plane crashed around 1 p.m., just two miles north of the Susanville airport.

Gregor says the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation. There was heavy snowfall and visibility was low at the time of the crash.

The plane is registered to Harold Gartner III of Janesville, Calif. There was no answer at the telephone number listed for Gartner.
