El Camino ended the St. Mary's High volleyball team's three-year reign as Sac-Joaquin Section champion, beating the Rams 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 in the Division III final Thursday at the Davis Rec Hall.

St. Mary's was one of two area teams to fall in section finals. Ripon lost to Christian Brothers in Division IV, while Ripon Christian defeated Bradshaw Christian in Division V.

All three area teams will participate in the CIF Northern California Regional Championships beginning Tuesday at home sites.

St. Mary's (18-8) hoped to secure a first-round home game with a win in the section final. Instead, the Rams will open on the road for the first time in four years. Pairings will be released Sunday.

Top-seeded St. Mary's held a 7-2 lead in a second game that featured 15 ties and seven lead changes, but third-seeded El Camino (31-6) rallied to maintain control.

"Game 2 would have evened it up," St. Mary's coach Angela McShane said. "Maybe we could have gotten into a rhythm, but they did a good job of keeping us out of rhythm. They were very smart, and they never allowed us to get into system."

The Eagles scored eight consecutive points to take a 12-4 lead in Game 3 and wouldn't relinquish the lead after the Rams cut the deficit to 20-18.

"They're a really good team, and we weren't on our 'A' game today," said junior outside hitter Priscilla Ezeji, who had 13 kills. "We just have to shake this game off and get back to practice."

McShane believes her team is capable of making a deep run in the NorCal championships, but she said they must reduce youthful mistakes.

"You learn a lot from a loss, and it's time for us to stop making excuses for our youth and start playing volleyball," McShane said.

"I told them they can feel sorry for themselves tonight, but then come back to the gym tomorrow and be ready to work."
