Hector Gomez named top midfielder
Tokay senior one of five Tiger players honored
The Tokay High soccer team remained in the playoff hunt until the final day of the regular season, and the Tigers were recently rewarded for their strong season when five players were named to the All-Tri City Athletic League team.
Leading the Tokay contingent was senior Hector Gomez, who was named the Midfielder of the Year after scoring seven goals and dishing out three assists in league action for the third-place Tigers.
"He was our workhorse and the team went as he did," Tokay coach Ruben Gomez said of Gomez. "He was our quarterback and a sound, all-around player."
Also named to the All-TCAL team were seniors Dylan Waugh and Michael Sublaban, junior Rigo Gomez and sophomore Nicholas Gonzalez.
Waugh, Tokay's most versatile player, spent much of his manning the net but was capable of playing any position on the field.
"He played where we needed him and gave us the best chance to win," Ruben Gomez said.
Rigo Gomez was the team's main scoring threat, leading the Tigers with nine league goals.
Sublaban stepped up his play at fullback and helped solidify a backfield that was questionable coming into the season.
"He eased some of the concerns I had," Ruben Gomez said of Sublaban's emergence.
Gonzalez contributed right away as a sophomore and impressed his coach with his skills.
"The kid has a lot of talent and ability and I'm glad to have him a couple more years," Gomez said.
Other special honors went to Goalie of the Year Alfredo Bustos of Stagg, Defender of the Year Cesar Garcia of Edison, and Forward of the Year Miguel Murillo of St. Mary's.
Led by coach Jim Marrone, a Lodi resident, Bustos and the Delta Kings won the TCAL championship. Edison placed second to earn the league's final playoff berth.
