Galt Joint Union High School Distric hires new superintendent
An associate superintendent from Modesto has been named Galt Joint Union High School District's new superintendent after an extensive search by an outside firm.
The decision to hire Daisy Lee was made during closed session late last week and became public this week when district staff was informed, according to board president Terry Parker-Owning.
The district did not issue an official press release.
Lee, who is currently the associate superintendent of one of three academic learning communities at Modesto City Schools, is scheduled to take on the district leadership role in Galt on Jan. 4. Her salary has yet to be negotiated.
She replaces former Superintendent Tom Gemma, who resigned and left the district on June 30. Since then, his duties have been handled first by trustee Diann Kitamura and later Chief Business Official Audrey Kilpatrick, who was appointed interim superintendent Aug. 31.
Lee was chosen with the assistance of Leadership Associates, Inc., a head-hunting firm hired to bring finalists to the board after a failed first attempt in-house. The company's contract cost the district approximately $21,000.
Last week, the school board interviewed five semi-final applicants in a special closed session and made the final unanimous decision to hire Lee.
"I think she's going to be good for the district," Parker-Owning said, adding that Lee is a "blessing" to the district and will act as a "unifier."
Lee, who could not be reached for comment late Wednesday, currently oversees health services and community affairs for the Modesto district, which serves more than 31,000 students, according to its Web site. Prior, she was administrator of academic achievement at Sacramento City Unified School District, and has been both a high school and elementary school principal, according to her resume.
Parker-Owning said Lee also has extensive experience working as an Englishlanguage advocate and already has "great" plans for the Galt district.
"She's done some great things at the schools she's been at," she added.
The school board plans to meet Dec. 8 to adopt Lee's contract, and she plans to start visiting the district's three schools before her actual January start date, according to Parker-Owning.
Lee, who has also taught curriculum and acted as a teacher coach, received a doctorate in educational administration from University of the Pacific in Stockton. She lives in Sacramento.
