Lodi board votes to cancel summer school for 2010
Lodi Unified has canceled its 2010 summer school classes to save money. The $600,000 needed to operate the program will instead go toward the general fund.
The district is currently facing a budget deficit between $20 million and $30 million. The reason for the spread is because the state budget for 2010-11 has not been approved, according to Chief Business Officlal Doug Barge.
The school board voted 6-1 Tuesday to scrap summer school classes for at least one year. Trustee Bonnie Cassel was the lone dissenter.
"Sometimes it's good to look at streamlining programs," said Neil Young who oversees summer school for the district.
The change will most affect high schoolers enrolled in academy programs and seniors who rely on summer school to complete graduation requirements.
