Lodi's Emily McConahey named top defensive player after Flames defend title
It seemed only fitting that Lodi High's Emily McConahey would be named the San Joaquin Athletic Association's Defensive Player of the Year.
McConahey was, after all, the best defender on a team that defended its league championship.
The senior outside hitter was one of four Flames named to the All-SJAA first team when the honors were recently released. She was joined by senior Jenae Reich, junior Ally Drake and sophomore Jessica Malcolm.
Lodi went 9-1 in league play and shared the SJAA title with Lincoln. It was the third straight year that the Flames were co-champs and Lodi captured outright titles the two previous years.
McConahey was a starter for three seasons, improving each year and capping her prep career with a fantastic senior campaign. Despite her small stature, the 5-foot-8 dynamo could dominate a game at the net with her athletic ability, finishing second on the team with 147 kills in league and preseason matches. She also did the dirty work, leading the Flames with 225 digs. McConahey also had 42 aces.
"She earned it," Lodi coach Krista Brereton said of McConahey's award.
"She held the team together. She was a phenomenal player."
Reich was a wall in the middle, leading Lodi with 103 blocks and adding 116 kills.
"She had a great season," Brereton said.
Drake stepped up her game this season and Brereton said opposing coaches took notice. Drake finished second on the team in receptions (157) and digs (221) and added 25 aces.
"She was mentally stronger this year and that made her physically better," Brereton said.
Malcolm was a big hitter for the Flames, registering a team-high 170 kills and adding 29 blocks and 65 digs.
"She did good job for us," Brereton said.
Making the All-SJAA second team from Lodi were junior Betsy Colburn and freshman Kaitlin Drake. Seniors Tori Shepard and Macy Boschee received honorable-mention nods.
Rounding out the special awards were MVP Lauren Jones of Lincoln, MVP Setter Ari Martinez of Chavez, MVP Hitter Tessa Lea'ea of Chavez and Newcomer of the Year Hailey Bethune of Lincoln.
