Writer remembers teaching at school
It was 58 years ago that Washington School opened. The entire faculty and student body of Emerson School was moved to our new school in the fall of 1951.
We actually started school at Emerson and moved into our new school in late October or early November.
We, as teachers, were very proud of our new "home," as we had been asked for input and ideas. I recall asking for slots for storage of puzzles and plenty of cupboard space. What I really enjoyed was the small aside area adjacent to our room where I set up two easels where the children could paint. They loved being able to go outside to paint while I could still supervise from the large window area. (Are first-graders still allowed to easel paint?)
As the youngest of the three first-grade teachers, I had the third choice of room color. Bea Peregoy chose her favorite — green, Ella Jean Kirk wanted the blue room and I got what I termed the "mauve" room. I loved it!
August Auch was the principal. I remember him as firm but very kind and congenial with all the faculty and students.
