Flames follow freshman Cassidy Daley to state

Accomplishment: Lodi High freshman Cassidy Daley placed fifth at the Sac-Joaquin Section cross country championships last Saturday in Folsom and helped the Flames place third and earn their first-ever trip to the state meet.

Daley completed the three-mile course at Willow Hill Reservoir in 19 minutes, 41 seconds.

The Flames will compete in the state championships on Nov. 28 in Fresno.

Family: Tim and Sueanne Daley, parents; two brothers and one sister.

Favorite sport: Basketball and cross country.

"Running is so much fun. You have so many teammates and you get support from people you don't even know," said Daley, who added that she's played basketball since she was a little girl.

Favorite athlete: Teammate Brenley Noori.

"She's always fun to be around and has always helped me out," Daley said of the junior.

Favorite hobbies: Playing sports.

Favorite subject: English. "It's easy to read and write," Daley said.

Dream car: Escalade.

Dream vacation: Hawaii.

Favorite local restaurant: Angelo's in Lodi. Daley said the beef tostada is her favorite dish.

Best sports moment: Her performance and the team's finish at the section meet.

Worst sports moment: Daley says she was playing a basketball championship game last year when she rolled her ankle.

"It hurt and I was crying," Daley said. "I didn't finish the game."

Plans: Daley says she is interested in photography.

The Athlete of the Week is selected by the News-Sentinel sports staff. Nominations are gladly accepted. Daley will receive a T-shirt courtesy of Lodi Sporting Goods for being selected.

" Cassidy is a great addition to our great group of girls! These kids make it easy to want to come to practice everday and run on the weekends. It doesn't hurt that she comes up big at the biggest moments. Nice job, now let's get ready for Fresno! "
