Special season nets honors for Lodi Flames
Defensive Player of the Year Justin Machado leads six Flames on all-league squad
A special bond led to a special season for the Lodi High boys soccer team.
"It was a real good season," senior Justin Machado said on Monday after learning he was named the San Joaquin Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year.
Machado was one of six Flames to earn all-league honors after Lodi finished second in league to earn a postseason berth and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.
"I'd like to remember being with this team even if we didn't get a championship," Machado said. "I had a lot of good friends on this team."
Other Flames honored were juniors Daniel Ochoa, Marco Ruiz and Frankie Ortiz and freshmen Lucas Travis and Hobie Day.
Machado spearheaded a defense that registered four shutouts in league play and limited a high-powered Modesto offense to one goal in a first-round playoff victory.
"He's a hard, aggressive tackler with great ballhandling skills," Lodi coach Tim Stutz said of the three-year player.
"He was one of my hardest workers and had an incredible fitness outlook."
In their first seasons with the Flames, freshmen Travis and Day were the offensive spark plugs for the Flames.
Travis shared the team lead with seven goals and added four assists for a team-high 18 points while Day contributed six goals and three assists for 15 points.
"I knew they were good, but didn't know they could handle varsity that well," Stutz said of the young phenoms, adding that Travis surprised him with his leadership skills while Day amazed him with his versatility.
Ochoa provided steady play at midfield, rarely losing the ball once he got into his clutches.
"He was solid and one of the most composed players I've been around," Stutz said of the junior, who finished with five assists.
Stutz praised Ruiz (four goals, three assists) for his attitude and his toughness.
"He's a beast," he said. "If he gets hurt he keeps on playing. He never quits working."
Ortiz was Lodi's clutch scorer, with several game-winning shots among his team-leading seven goals.
"He's a big, fast kid who had some of our bigger goals," Stutz said.
In other honors, Franklin's Alexis Leon was named SJAA MVP after leading the Yellowjackets to a league title and teammate Jose Andrade was named Goalie of the Year.
Bear Creek's Jose Estrada was named Offensive Player of the Year and Tracy's Max Garrigan Midfielder of the Year.
