The Lodi girls cross country team has run right into Lodi High's record books.
The Flames placed third in Saturday's Sac-Joaquin Section meet at Willow Hill Reservoir in Folsom, qualifying for the CIF state meet as a team for the first time in school history.
Tokay sophomore Haley Kroll, Galt's Kelsea Tiapon and Elliot Christian's Megan Crutchfield and Emily Buhrkuhl also merited individual invitations to the state meet, which will be held on Nov. 28 in Fresno.
The Flames, who were ranked third in Division I the section heading into the meet, finished with 114 points to finish behind winner Oak Ridge (38 points) and runner-up Davis (57 points).
Freshman Cassidy Daley led the pack, finishing fifth overall with a time of 19 minutes and 41 seconds. Following her for the Flames were sophomore Sydney Olagaray in 30th (21:22), junior Brenley Noori in 34th (21:36), junior Carla Taylor in 36th (21:42), junior Xochitl Mellor in 42nd (22:04), sophomore Katie Westerterp in 44th (22:09) and senior Emily Highsmith in 63rd (23:52).
"It is something we have been working toward," Lodi head coach Jeff Tillett said about his team advancing to state. "The last month or so, we knew we had a shot at it. They had to fend off some teams, but the girls did it."
Lodi's Tommy Lomeli, the lone varsity boys running for the Flames, placed 19th overall in the Division I boys race with a time of 17:24. He missed a state-qualifying spot by 28 seconds.
Kroll placed 10th in the Division I girls race with a 19:24, edging teammate Holly Ranklin (11th, 19:54) for the final state-qualifying spot.
"Haley Kroll ran an incredible race today," said Tokay head coach Karey Harty.
Zack Leffler, the only Tiger running in the boys Division I race, placed 26th with a 17:43.
In the Division III girls race, Tiapon finished 11th, grabbing the final state-qualifying mark with a 20:23. In the Division V girls race, Crutchfield and Buhrkuhl put together impressive races, placing fifth and seventh respectively. Crutchfield finished in 24:33 and Buhrkuhl turned in a 26:25.
In lower-level races, Lodi's La Rue Taufer (23:42) placed 24th overall in the JV race and bettered her time by four minutes.
The Lodi frosh-soph girls placed third as a team led by Teresa Lallana (17th, 15:32), Olivia Smith (23rd, 15:44), Katie O'Connor (28th, 15:58), Kylie Denton (30th, 16:05), Madelyn Blank (32nd, 16:25), Haley Schlgeter (37th, 16:45) and Reyna Villanueva (40th, 16:45). The Flames have now finished in the top three in the last three years. Lodi's freshman boys took fourth and were led by Matthew Mellor in 12th with a 12:36 and Austin Costa in 17th with a 12:51.
