Tokay's Nikola Polcerova goes three sets before bowing out
Nikola Polcerova battled both an illness and the Sac-Joaquin Section's top-ranked player on Friday, but couldn't come out with wins against either.
The Tokay High tennis player fell to Laguna Creek's Tiffany Pham 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-1 in the section semifinals at In-Shape Sports West Lane Club, ending a memorable season that included at Tri-City Athletic League individual championship.
No. 3-seeded Polcerova, who is a foreign exchange student from Slovakia, also wasn't feeling 100 percent on Thursday but still cruised through her two opening round matches. In doing so, she earned the matchup with Pham, who also won her first-round matches in two sets.
"I didn't feel very good and it was a tough match. It was pretty even," Polcerova said. "I don't think that it was that she was better or that I was better, we are both good players. She was just better this match."
Polcerova would have been the first Tiger to play for a section championship.
St. Mary's Christiana Ferrari, the No. 2 seed, defeated Napa's Danielle Mirda 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the final match where she beat Pham, the No. 1 seed, 7-6 (13), 7-6 (5) for the section title. Ferrari was the section's runner-up last year.
Despite the loss, Polcerova said she enjoyed coming to play for the Tigers this season. She will now finish out the semester at Tokay before returning home on Jan. 2.
Currently, she doesn't have any other tennis competitions on tap, but said she will try to find some tournaments to play in during the remainder of her stay in the United States.
In doubles play, St. Mary's Nikki Kriskovich and Lindsey Williams fell 6-3, 6-3 to a Davis duo that went on to win the championship.
