Stephen Malcolm signs letter of intent to play baseball for Virginia Tech
Several other local student athletes receive offers from universities
When the Virginia Tech coaches offered Stephen Malcolm a scholarship to come and play baseball for the Hokies, he had to ask them to repeat it because he thought it was too good to be true.
Malcolm, a former Tokay High and Lodi Baseball Club star who is currently playing for Delta College, took the Hokies up on their offer, signing a letter of intent to attend Virginia Tech starting in the fall of 2010.
Malcolm said the school began recruiting him about a month and a half ago. After visiting the Hokie campus, Malcolm decided it was a place he would love to play. Then they made him the offer â€" a scholarship that would cover 80 percent of his tuition.
Malcolm redshirted at UC Irvine last year before transferring to Delta this year. He played for the Lodi GrapeSox and Lodi Baseball Club the last two summers. He will play this year at Delta and then transfer to Virginia Tech in the fall of 2010. He will still have three years of eligibility to play for the Hokies.
A handful of other Lodi student-athletes also signed letters on Thursday including: Tokay's Katelyne Herrington (UNLV, swimming), Tokay's Michele Poteet (Southwest Oregon C.C., softball), Lodi High's Tori Shepard (Pacific, softball), Lodi's Brooke Ortiz (Fresno St., softball), Lodi's Hannah Merrill (Alabama, rowing), St. Mary's Madeline Kennedy (UC Davis, gymnastics) and Alle Moreno (Sac State, basketball).
