Elliot to play for first section title in soccer
The Elliot Christian boys soccer team is headed into uncharted territory — the Division VII Sac-Joaquin Section Championship.
The Eagles defeated Rite of Passage/Sierra Ridge 1-0 on the road on Thursday in the section semifinals and are now headed to their first section title match in school history.
"This is exciting, especially when you have 13 freshmen and sophomores playing basically against grown men," said Elliot head coach Sean Greene. "It was a hard-fought battle."
The Eagles, the third and final seed to make the playoffs out of the Harvest Christian League, will now face Tioga in Saturday's championship match at 10 a.m. at Folsom High School.
On Thursday, Elliot senior goalie Andrew Cotton made 12 saves. Cotton was aided by outstanding games from defenders Anthony Galletta, a senior who played injured, sophomore Eli Scofield and freshmen Clayton Silva and Randall Blythe.
With Elliot (10-7-4) up 1-0, Rite of Passage/Sierra Ridge (7-6) bombarded the Eagles' net in the closing minutes of the game, but Cotton held them at bay.
"He saved us many times," Greene said.
In the first half, Elliot's Paul Goossens and Scott Greene teamed up for the game's only goal. Goosens directed a throw in toward Greene, who wheeled around 180 degrees and volleyed a shot into the right side of the net.
The game got more and more physical as it dragged on, but the Eagles stood their ground. After the final whistle blew, it was celebration time for the Eagles.
"Win, lose or draw, at this point, it's been a very good time," Coach Greene said. "I tell them all the time to have fun, play hard and never give up and that's what we are all about."
