Nikola Polcervoa going for Tokay's first section title in tennis
Nikola Polcerova's will only be at Tokay High for one semester.
That may be all the time she needs to go down as the best Tiger tennis player in the school's history.
With two victories in Thursday's Division I Sac-Joaquin Section individual tennis tournament at In-Shape Sports West Lane Club in Stockton, Polcerova, a foreign exchange student from Slovakia, is headed to today's semifinals. If No. 3-seeded Polcerova can defeat top-seeded Tiffany Pham of Laguna Creek in today's 9 a.m. match, she will become the first Tiger to play in a section championship match.
In the section doubles tournament on Thursday, Lodi High's duo of Anna Adams and Jacque Lord, the two-time San Joaquin Athletic Association doubles champions, fell 6-2, 7-6, 3-6 in a close match to Pleasant Grove to end the Flames' season.
On Thursday, despite not feeling 100 percent, Polcerova rolled easily to victory. In the opening round, she defeated Katrina Castner of Napa 6-1, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, she beat Elise Cusenza of Turlock 6-2, 6-0.
"In the morning I didn't feel very good. I was sore and a little bit sick, but everything was going OK," Polcerova said. "I didn't expect that it would go so easy today. Tomorrow I play the No. 1 seed and I haven't seen her play, but I expect it will be a tough match."
Tokay head coach Gayleen Stock said she was a little worried at the start of both matches when Polcerova's opponents got a few points early. She then watched Polcerova adjust.
"Niki was amazing today," Stock said. "I am amazed with her strategy and her demeanor."
Polcerova, who won the Tri-City Athletic League individual championship, and TCAL runner-up Christiana Ferrari of St. Mary's will both play in semifinal action today. The section championship is slated for noon today.
