Daniel Shuler, Lodi Flames stymie the Falcons
Daniel Shuler was on a mission. He wanted to be a wall and help the Lodi High boys water polo team advance to the semifinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. Mission complete.
The Flame goalie made save after save, thwarting Fairfield's scoring chances and helping Lodi to a 6-2 quarterfinal victory on Wednesday at the Tokay High pool.
"Their goalie was really good too," Shuler said of his counterpart, Fairfield's Dillan Trejo. "I was nervous about that because I wanted to step up and show that he wasn't the best goalie. I had to prove my worth."
Whether it was 1-on-1 breakaways, 5-meter penalty shots or lasers from far out, only two shots got by the Lodi senior all game as the Flames found redemption in beating a Falcon squad that knocked them out of the playoffs last year.
Both goalies, aided by tough defenses, dominated a first half that ended in a 2-2 tie. Joe VanderLans netted one goal and Jake Lear capitalized on a steal that created a 1-on-1 breakaway to account for Lodi's scoring in the first half.
Midway through the third period, the Flames' offense erupted. Lear scored on another 1-on-1 opportunity to put Lodi up 3-2 with 3:40 to go in the third. A little over a minute later, Lear found Chris Orgon for another Lodi score.
Dillon Smith scored a highlight-reel goal on the next play. He went from facing the goal, to rotating 180 degrees to grab the ball behind him, to releasing a rocket as he completed the 360 that gave the Flames a three-goal cushion.
Fairfield head coach Charles Fahlstrom said he was playing with a short bench and Lodi wore the Falcons down.
"Most of my guys played the whole game. They were fatigued in the second half. That made the counterattacking for Lodi a little bit easier," he said. "They had better swimmers on that team."
Orgon scored again in the fourth quarter for the game's final score, Lodi's defense only allowed the Falcons to take one shot in the final four minutes and the Flames rolled into the semifinals. Lodi will now face Davis, last year's section champion, at 2 p.m. on Friday at Tokay High.
Davis' roster is loaded with seniors, while Lodi's only lists two and Shuler is the only starter. After Davis' lopsided wins over Tokay and Napa, Lodi head coach Robert Elrod knows the Flames are underdogs.
"Davis is tough," Elrod said. "We'll see how long we can give Davis a run for their money and if we're still in it, we're still in it. If not, then we have exceeded our expectations."
