It's a matter of choice

Thursday, November 12, 2009 6:28 AM PST

I would like to direct this letter to Karen Buchanan since she made the original complaint to the Madison, Wis.-based Freedom from Religion Foundation about prayers ending in the name of Jesus at our City Council meetings and asking the council to eliminate references to Jesus Christ or the city of Lodi would be sued.

As a citizen of this United States, I feel that we should do God's desire of loving one another. Jesus did do just that while He was here on Earth. I truly believe in Him and I respect your right not to believe. It is everyone's choice in this whole world to be free to believe or not as to what one chooses. I feel that conflict over this is not showing us respect for what we think and feel and I don't feel this is a debatable subject in our world, right now — as times are so hard for everyone.

I feel we all have freedom to think and do and feel the they way each one of us thinks and its just a matter of choice. You choose what you feel and think and let everyone else have that freedom too — that's true love for all.

We all value our freedom. It's just a matter of choice.

You asked me a question and then commented as if I had already answered you all in one post. I guess you really didn't want an answer from me.

It's interesting... David Diskin's actions have been more Christian-like in this city matter than many of those who call themselves Christians. "

" I wonder if the city council will make sure there is a complete rotation on these invocations so there isn't any one religion being represented more than others. "

" And Sam, many people have come to find God and Jesus because they were exposed to someone who was unafraid of sharing their faith in public. It may have made them feel uncomfortable or out of place 99 times but that last time spoke to them. Thus my original statement, "there for you should always be "sharing" your religion either through words or actions." "

" Sam, did David "force" his ideals on community and volenteering on those who listened at the CC meeting? No, he only shared. I disagree that public prayer is "forcing" belief on someone. This would be like saying a PDA by a same sex couple is forcing homosexuality on someone.

No one is "forced" to participate in the prayer. Shoot look around you on a Sunday, if there are people who go to church and don't feel "forced" to participate then those who don't want to participate at a CC meeting aren't forced. I was at a family wedding were they prayed to the seven gods repeatedly, I just didn't participate.

Now remember Sam, I too disagree with the opening to the CC meetings with prayer or other statement. But I am against it because i believe the CC members are using it solely as a way to get votes, not because of any real conviction. "

" Rhodie, me forcing my Christian beliefs on someone with a prayer at a CC council meeting is not "sharing" my Christianity if it makes them feel out of place and uncomfortable.

I pray non stop for guidance. God hears me. I do not have to make sure you hear me. "

" Ivan Dixon, never thought I'd agree with you....but your comment, "Betty, its not about what YOU think and feel it is about what OUR government DOES on OUR dime," is SPOT ON!!!!

Well SAID! "

" The same might be said for the stress Karen Buchanan is obviously under. Why else would she contact Wisconsin and have someone want to sue the city of Lodi. She is the one who needs to get over it. What a loser, IMHO. "

Agreed. And the government, namely the Lodi CC, should stay neutral. "

" Mazie...if you are suffering from stress, it is because you do it to yourself. Stress is brought on by your own thoughts and actions, not by the thoughts and actions of others. By your logic, a lot of us are suffering from stress due to your comments. "

" I respect her right to not believe, she should do the same for us. We are not huring anyone by praying and now that even athiests can speak at the CC should make her happy but somehow i don't see that happening. This is really getting old and LNS should just stop printing letters about this subject PERIOD. The stress is really getting to me, and i would think it is getting to alot of other people as well. "

" Karen Buchanan has caused alot of stress in my life. Perhaps i should speak to an attorney. Would serve her right if we all got together and sued her over all this. I feel like she is trying to take away my freedom of religion. "
