City considers Adopt-A-Park program to help with park maintenance
Lodi city staff is working on an Adopt-A-Park program in an effort to find new ways to maintain service with less money.
The program would allow a group to perform tasks like picking up trash or doing some shrub maintenance, said Jim Rodems, parks and recreation director. Service clubs, religious groups and scout groups might want to participate, he said.
"If we are being cut in our level of funding, the community still expects us to do certain things," Rodems said. "This is a mechanism to provide services to the level Lodi is used to."
The volunteers will not be allowed to use power tools or any sharp objects because of liability issues, Rodems said. They will also be supervised by a staff member, and the city already has insurance that covers volunteers.
"It's the cost of volunteers these days, we have to protect the city," he said.
