Lodi Flames suffer uneasy soccer exit in loss to Cougars
When you don't bring your best game in the playoffs, it's usually your last game.
Lodi High soccer coach Tim Stutz said his team had a case of the jitters on Tuesday afternoon and never seemed comfortable in a 3-1 loss to Golden Valley in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I quarterfinal game in Merced.
The Flames (10-3-6) trailed for much of the match and when they finally scored and tied the game early in the second half Golden Valley needed only three minutes to retake the lead for good.
Hugo Hernandez had a goal and an assist in a dominating performance for the Cougars (16-2-3), who will play the winner of Davis-Napa game in the semifinals on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Lincoln High School.
The Flames head home after enjoying their finest season since 2006, when they lost to Atwater in the section quarterfinals.
"We were nervous all day and it showed," Stutz said after the loss. "They played great defense against us — the same way I would defend against us. We couldn't make adjustments.
"It wasn't our best day."
Golden Valley took the lead four minutes into the contest when Hernandez got behind the Lodi defense on a free kick and found the net for the game's first score.
Stutz said Lodi had opportunities to tie the game in the first half but it wasn't until the 53rd minute in the second half that the Flames finally got on the scoreboard. Daniel Ochoa took a shot that hit off the crossbar but Sandro Santillan pounced on the rebound for an easy score.
Any momentum gained by the Flames was short-lived as the Cougars answered three minutes later when Hernandez flicked a header in the path of a streaking Matt Hubbard, who chipped it past Lodi goalkeeper Jorge Diaz for the game-winning score.
Daniel Byrne added a late goal for Golden Valley and Elias Ruiz added an assist.
Diaz finished with three saves for the Flames and Memo Ramirez had four for the Cougars.
Stutz was disappointed with Tuesday's outcome but was proud of his team's effort this season.
"For being a young team and the number of injuries we had to battle through all year we had an excellent season," he said.
"We were a deep team and able to survive games we couldn't in past years. The future looks good."
