Lodi's Marissa Hinchman gains experience at Northern California golf championships
The Northern California championships came at Marissa Hinchman as fast as a runaway putt on the gut-wrenching greens at Almaden Country Club.
Making her first appearance in the NorCal tourney, the Lodi High sophomore struggled but came away with valuable experience after shooting a 92 on Monday in San Jose.
Hinchman failed to qualify for the state championships, but she'll get more opportunities.
"It was a bad day but I'll learn from mistakes," Hinchman said. "Next year I'll try to get back and do better."
Hinchman said the Almaden was one of the most difficult courses she's played this season, with hilly terrain and slick greens making for challenging round.
"Putting was definitely my biggest weakness," Hinchman said. "Some of the greens were downhill, and you'd make a putt and it would just keep rolling past the hole."
Lodi coach Tara Staal said Hinchman was up against some stiff competition.
"For a sophomore she did a really good job," Staal said. "She learned a lot today. She'll be back next year and maybe a competitor to go to state."
Hinchman started her round on the 10th hole and was even through four holes before double bogeying the fifth and sixth holes. She went out with a 5-over 41 on the front nine.
She opened the back nine with a triple bogey and was never able to recover.
Despite Monday's finish, Hinchman said it was a good season for the Flames, who won league and divisional titles. "I wish the team could have come along with me," Hinchman said. "It would have been more fun.
"I had a good season but I could have done better. Now I know what I need to work on to get better next year."
St. Francis finished first on Monday with a 395, following up last week's section victory with a NorCal title. Alameda was second (399), followed by Granada (420), Foothill (434), St. Ignatius (434) and Presentation (437).
Hannah Suh of Evergreen Valley was the low medalist with a 2-under 70 and was followed by Presentation's Mariko Tumangan and Alameda's Grace NA (71), Salinas' Taylor Camany (72) and Alameda's Samantha Moyal and Granada's Marguerite Swearengin (73).
