Public invited to fundraiser for 1-year-old heart transplant patient
Musarat Shan Khan's peers are rallying around her and her 1-year-old daughter for a fundraiser this week.
Little Janna Amber needs a heart transplant at Stanford University Hospital and Khan's Lodi friends hope to pull together money from a spaghetti dinner to help cover the cost of gas, lodging and food.
"There are so many people who care. It's so amazing that so many people are coming together for this one little girl," Khan said, adding that strangers come up to her to tell her they're praying for her and her family.
Khan's daughter was born with a complete heart blockage and had a pacemaker placed inside her. It worked fine until her recent birthday. Doctors told Khan there was a blockage and the baby needed a heart transplant.
"She's doing well, she's on medication and holding up," Khan said.
Khan lives in Lodi with her husband, Abdul, and their other two children, ages 7 and 2.
She works at McNair High School in special education, but the event is being organized by her friends at Needham Elementary.
Co-worker Deana Scroggins said she and her peers knew they needed to do something to help the family when they heard about Janna.
"We are a very close work family ourselves, and this was a way to show our support in this very difficult time. We want them to know how much we care," she added. "Besides the overwhelming costs of having a child in the hospital, we feel that our morale and positive spirit support is just as important. Our goal is to bring hope to Janna's mom and bring Janna back home."
Khan has been overwhelmed by the kindness of her friends and peers she barely knows.
"They're not just my co-workers, they're my friends, my sisters," she said. "I just want to thank everyone for everything they're doing for Janna."
The fundraiser will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Temple Baptist Church, 801 S. Lower Sacramento Road. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at Vine & Branches, 110 W. Oak St.; House of Coffees, 239 Lakewood Mall; or by calling Liz at 745-0246, Deana at 327-3501, or Regina 712-2533. They will also be sold at the door on the night of the event.
