Lady Flames, seven local runners headed to cross country sections
When it comes to cross country, the Flames and the Tigers are proving they can run with the best of them.
The Lodi High varsity girls placed third overall in the Division I Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section meet on Saturday at Angels Camp on Saturday to advance to section meet as a team. Tokay High's Holly Rankin and Haley Kroll also both advanced in the girls race.
In the varsity boys race, Lodi's Tommy Lomeli and Tokay's Zack Leffler both posted fast enough times to advance.
Elliot Christian's Megan Crutchfield placed fourth overall in the girls Division V meet to collect an individual bid to sections and will be joined by her teammate Emily Burhkuhl (8th, 25:45). In the Division III race, Galt's Kelsea Tiapon grabbed an individual qualifying spot by finishing 26th overall (20:45).
Rankin was the top area runner in the DI girls race, placing sixth overall with a time of 19 minutes and 53 seconds. Kroll took 15th in 20:04.
Cassidy Daley led the Lady Flames, finishing seventh overall with a 19:56 mark. Lodi also got great runs from Sydney Olagaray (23rd, 20:41), Brenley Noori (37th, 21:27), Xochitl Mellor (39th, 21:31), Katie Westerterp (40th, 21L32), Margot Haswell (44th, 21:45) and Carla Taylor (47th, 21:53). Taylor filled in as a substitute for Emily Highsmith, who was recovering from an illness.
Sheldon's Breanna Lewis won the race with a 19-minute mark. Oak Ridge finished first in the team standings followed by Davis. Tokay finished 13th as a squad.
The Flames were ranked No. 3 heading into the meet and held their same spot in the 19-team field. If they can finish in the top three at the section meet at Willow Hills in Folsom on Saturday, they will advance to the state meet as a squad.
Lomeli, who won the San Joaquin Athletic League meet in convincing fashion last week, turned in a 16:53 to earn 15th place an individual qualifying spot. Leffler took 28th with a 17:20.
The Tokay boys finished 13th in the team standings, missing a team-qualifying spot by only nine points, while Lodi placed 15th in the 28-squad field.
In the Division III standings, the Galt girls placed 13th and the boys took 14th after being paced by Matt Freitag (55th, 18:34).
In the Division I/II junior girls varsity race, Lodi's La Rue Taufer placed 34th (23:59) and qualified for next week's section meet. The Lady Flames frosh-soph team placed third in their meet to qualify for sections as a team. Lodi was led by Katie O'Conner (20th, 15:17), Teresa Lallana (22nd, 15:21), Madelyn Blank (26, 15:53), Olivia Smith (42nd, 15:53) Kylie Denton (46th, 16:09), Reyna Villanueva (66th, 16:30) and Haley Schlgeter (68th, 16:36).
The Lodi freshmen boys also qualified as a team, taking fourth and Matthew Mellos (11th, 12:17), Austin Costa (18th, 12:53), Connor Phillips (31st, 13:25), Alec Fromm (33rd, 13:31), Anthony Piombo (34th, 13:33), Dylan Woods (41st, 13:50) and Andrew Fonda (45th, 13:56) are all headed to sections.
