Lodi Flames light up Downey, Davis knocks out Tokay Tigers in boys water polo
The Flames have a shot at revenge. The Lodi High boys water polo team dominated Downey 18-5 in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs on Saturday at Johansen High School, setting up a rematch with Fairfield.
The Falcons eliminated the Flames in the quarterfinals of last year's playoffs 7-5 and also edged Lodi by one goal in a match earlier this season at Fairfield.
Now the Flames get to battle them in Lodi as the two teams will play at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
Tokay High was also in action in Saturday's playoffs, but lost 19-3 to Davis, a team favored to win the section title.
Against Downey, Lodi took a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and practically put the match away by going up 9-1 at half.
"It took us a little bit to get going, but once we got going, we did fine," Lodi head coach Robert Elrod said.
Lodi freshman Joe VanderLans played a huge part in the Flames' offensive explosion. He recorded a team-high six assists and scored three goals of his own as he was in on half of Lodi's goals. Jake Lear scored six times for Lodi, while Chris Orgon netted five goals, Allen Daniels scored two and Jake Dodd and Mitch Thomas each scored one.
Lodi goalie Daniel Shuler made five saves in the game before Andrew Watts entered the game in the fourth quarter and made one save and recorded two steals. Watts and Thomas moved up from Lodi's frosh-soph team to play for the Flames in the playoffs.
Fairfield upset Golden Valley on Saturday to set up Wednesday's rematch. The winner will advance to the semifinals at Tokay High at 2 p.m. on Friday
The Tokay boys were led by Danny Kemether with two goals and Cole Mahoney added the Tigers' other score. The loss ended the season for Tokay, which finished second in the Tri-City Athletic League this season.
The Tokay girls will take the pool in quarterfinal action on Wednesday in their home pool to face Vintage at 9 a.m. A win would put the Tigers in the semifinals for the first time in school history.
