Tech Trek highlighted in first AAUW meeting

The first meeting of the 2009-10 program year for Lodi Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has held on Sept. 15 and featured a presentation from three students who had been sponsored by the Branch to attend a Tech Trek camp for one week in June at California State University in Fresno.

The three girls, Amber Buhagiar, Judith Barajas and Kaitlyn Meier, who attend Delta Sierra Middle School, shared their experiences, class projects and albums with the group.

Tech Trek was originated 12 years ago by California AAUW as the result of a study that indicated a tendency toward declining interest in math and science and related fields. All sleeping, eating, instruction and recreational facilities are located on a university campus where camps are held.

Tech Trek provides every camper with exposure to all core subjects taught, as well as a selection of rotating labs designed to explore individual specialties more deeply. Hands-on activities in core classes, rotating labs and field trips at Tech Trek camps help to make math and science fun as well as educational. Instructors included credentialed middle school teachers and women currently engaged professionally in math, science or technology fields.

Evening programs could include astronomy, engineering, marine biology, and environmental studies to enhance learning experience and introduce students to a variety of potential career areas.

The Lodi Branch of AAUW has sent students to Tech Trek camp since the inception of the program. A different middle school is chosen each year by random drawing but alternates each year between Lodi Unified School District schools. Students are selected on the basis of recommendations from their science or math teachers, followed by an application and a personal interview.

The number of campers is limited only by what the Branch can afford. The cost to send one girl to camp in 2010 is $800. Each student's family pays only $50. Donations are gratefully accepted, are tax refundable and can really make a difference.
