Omega Nu helps students get new running shoes

Omega Nu Sorority with the help from Heritage Oak Winery and Fleet Feet of Stockton, are providing young runners with shoes. The runners are part of the Bridges After School Program at Lawrence Elementary School.

Funding for the shoes comes primarily from Omega Nu, though clients from Heritage Oak also contributed to the program durin a fundraising event last December. Together, the two organizations raised over $1,000.

The shoes will be purchased at cost from Fleet Feet of Stockton. Fleet Feet owner Tony Vice has volunteered to visit the school to take measurements of the children's feet. The fitting will be held Friday at 4 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

"This effort has been wonderful," said Carmela Hoffman, one of the coaches for the after school program. "Forty children, who would not otherwise have had new running shoes this year, will be training in comfort."

Many of the participants in the eastside elementary school come from needy families. Forty children from the program's 91 participants were selected for the free shoes last week when a drawing was held to determine which of the children would be recipients.

"We are proud to be able to participate in this worthy cause," said Nadia Bartlam, an Omega Nu member who served on the sorority's Community Caring Committee. "We feel it is important to help children get out and participate in running programs like this." Omega Nu has made similar donations to a parallel program at Heritage School, another elementary school in Lodi's east side. As well, the group has also sponsored young runners from both schools by providing them with entry fees for local 5k and 10k runs.
