Sierra Valley Conference tennis tournament has 'super' ending for Warrior tandem

Galt High's Christina Phillips and Jana Hackett had a super finish to their Sierra Valley Conference seasons on Thursday at Broadstone Country Club in Folsom.

The Warrior tandem defeated Oak Ridge's Julia Dunnigan and Rachel Waugh 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in the super doubles championship match at the SVC tournament. Super doubles is the best two teams of singles players from each team.

Phillips and Hackett advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II tournament, which will be held next Thursday and Friday at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.

"They played beautifully," Galt coach Suzanne Stebbins said. "It's really exciting. They decided at the last minute to play together and they were obviously the best team."

Phillips and Hackett, the third-seeded team heading into the tourney, had a first-round bye and then knocked off Christian Brothers' Katie Marshall and Natalie Dryer 6-1, 6-3 in the second round and Oak Ridge's Grace Kim and Katrina Lund 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals.

In other super doubles action, Galt's Sarah Houghtaling and Alexis Silva lost their first-round and consolation matches.

In regular doubles play, Galt's No. 1 doubles team of Allison Barsetti and Dani Wise won their first-round match 8-6 over Union Mine's Gabby Aveni and Laura Hammond before falling to Oak Ridge's Lund and Kaitlin Corell in the second round.

Galt's No. 2 doubles squad of Corrine Madison and Courtney Wright made a run to the finals, beating Union Mine's Dylan Jacoy and Michelle Lee 8-1 in the first round and Oak Ridge's Madison McRonald and Clara Johnson 8-5 in the second round. In the finals, the Warrior duo lost 8-4 to Ponderosa's Susan Parkyn and Katelyn Roberts.

Alyssa Greenhaw and Olivia Seifert, Galt's No. 3 doubles team, beat Liberty Ranch's Faith Lamire-Baeten and Monica Fregoso 8-0 in the first round and Union Mine's Jessi McPeters and Hannah Edminster 8-0 in the second round before falling to an Oak Ridge team, 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 in the finals.

The Warriors finished third in the SVC standings this season after posting a 10-4 league mark.
