Lodi man accused of smuggling drugs, weapons for inmates at state prison
A Lodi man who works at a Sacramento prison has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling weapons and drugs to prisoners.
Domingo Garcia, 39, bailed out of the Sacramento County Jail on Tuesday, a day after he was arrested and his home was searched.
He was booked on suspicion of smuggling a weapon into a prison, smuggling a controlled substance into a prison, unauthorized communication with prisoners and conspiracy.
Garcia is currently on administrative leave while the investigation continues, said Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. She did not know if the leave is paid or unpaid.
The department's internal affairs arrested Garcia, and they subsequently searched his Lodi home around 6 p.m. Monday.
His wife called Lodi police because she wasn't sure the agents were legitimate. Local officers confirmed the agents' identities and were not further involved in the matter, according to Lodi police.
Nobody answered the door at Garcia's home Thursday.
Neighbors said they did not know him very well personally and were not sure why he was arrested.
Garcia has been employed by the corrections department since April 2000 and works at California State Prison, Sacramento, which is located in Folsom. The prison houses maximum security inmates, Thornton said.
Thornton declined to comment on the details of the allegations, or if there were any other suspects, saying only that the investigation continues.
