Young girl is 200,000th person to assemble AIDS, HIV care kit
Ashlee Brink is a precocious 7-year-old who loves to talk and help her community.
The second-grader at Joe Serna Jr. Charter School was declared the 200,000th person to assemble a care package for caregivers assisting people suffering from AIDS and HIV around the world. The kit included antibacterial soap, latex gloves, petroleum jelly, oral rehydration salts and antifungal cream.
It takes her five minutes to assemble each kit, the majority of which is spent writing a note in each kit. She'll write a biblical verse or something like, "I'm praying for you."
The daughter of Lisa Boyle and Josh Brink, Ashlee has assembled 12 kits since last year at Temple Baptist Church for the World Vision program, a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with families and their communities worldwide. She wants to go on mission trips to other countries when she's old enough.
"I like helping people," Ashlee said with a smile.
Not only has Ashlee assembled caregiver kits, but she helps in other ways as well. Through the Serve Lodi Day project, she was part of a team that painted a living room of a house the One-Eighty Teen Center recently purchased, according to her grandmother, Janet Brink.
"She hears something in church, and she's the first to sign up," Janet Brink said. "Our church gives a lot of opportunity to serve."
