Serial killer sentenced to prison without parole
Serial killer Roger Reece Kibbe was sentenced today to six terms of life in prison with no possibility of parole for raping and murdering women several decades ago.
Now 70, the sentence means Kibbe, dubbed the “I-5 Strangler,” will die in prison.
The sentencing gave victims’ family members a chance to tell a judge about their loved ones. Though they were instructed to address their comments to the judge, they spoke of Kibbe as a monster.
In a deal to avoid the death penalty, Kibbe pleaded guilty in September to murdering seven women between 1977 and 1986. The victims were: Lou Ellen Burleigh, 21, of Walnut Creek; Lora Heedick, 21, of Modesto; Barbara Ann Scott, 29, of Pittsburg; Stephanie Brown, 19, of Sacramento; Charmaine Sabrah, 25, of Sacramento; and Katherine Kelly Quinones, 25, of Sacramento.
As women began disappearing near roadways and their bodies turned up dumped in ditches, the killer was called the “I-5 Strangler.”
Kibbe had long been suspected in the deaths, but due to science limitations in the 1980s, he was charged with one murder. He was convicted in 1991 of raping and murdering 17-year-old Darcie Frackenpohl in El Dorado County, and has been serving a sentence of 25 years to life.
Advancements in DNA then tied Kibbe to more murders, ultimately leading to today’s sentencing.
