Lodi Lake closed to fishing until January
Lodi Lake is closed to fishing until Jan. 1, 2010. The lake is also closed from April 1 until the fourth Saturday in May and again from Oct. 16 to Jan. 1 of the following year.
Lodi Lake is included as part of the closure from Peltier Road to Camanche Dam.
In the Delta, the sturgeon fishing is still very slow. There are many reports of fish jumping all around the boats but very few bites. The striped bass are still scattered and those being caught are generally on the small side. Bait fishermen and trollers alike are catching many undersized fish before getting a keeper. The average keeper for striped bass this past week was only about 20 inches. Some of the areas to try with bait are False River, in front of Gallagher Island, and the dairy on the Sacramento River. Sutter Slough has had trollers doing pretty well the past week. The fishermen that are throwing fish traps or top-water baits in the sloughs are taking about 20 to 30 fish, although most are under the 18-inch limit.
We have had many reports of trollers and bait fishermen catching salmon on shad and sardines as well as Yozuri lures while trolling for striped bass.
Remember all salmon must be released and unharmed if possible. Black Bass is a bit on the slow side although the fishermen are getting into boils of small striped bass in the back sloughs.
At Camanche, the fishing has been in high gear ever since the trout planting started. The fish are scattered all over the lower part of the lake and are hitting well for the trollers. The best reports are from those using Rapala in either the F7 hot steel or fire tiger colors. Needlefish and the R lure are also doing well. The best trolling speed is 2 to 3 miles per hour for both the spoons and Rapala lures.
All the fish are good size and reports of fish to over 5 pounds are not uncommon. Bait fishing has been good in the pond using powerbait and power eggs. On the north shore bank fishermen are doing well in camper bay and the recreational area using power eggs and the best colors seem to be white, hatch brown or pink. Good luck and good fishing.
