Tokay boys, girls place two on first team

Both of Tokay's water polo teams were Tri-City Athletic League runner-ups this season and both were rewarded with two first-team all-TCAL selections and another two second-team picks.

For the boys, seniors Daniel Kemether (utility man) and Sam Walker (goalkeeper) earned spots on the first team. Senior goalie Cha Cha Morisaki and sophomore Taitum Herrington (utility player/2-meter defense) were voted to the girls all-TCAL first team.

Making the boys TCAL second team for Tokay were Cole Mahoney and Tyler Grupe, while Derek Leale received honorable mention. For the Lady Tigers, Charis Mahoney and Mimi Morisaki were chosen for the TCAL second team, while fellow Tigers Anna Price and Sydney Iturraran got honorable mention nods.

Opposing teams had a hard time scoring on either Tiger team this season with Walker and Morisaki in the cages. Tokay head coach Kraig Jorgensen said this year was Walker's best at Tokay.

"This year he is a totally different player — poised and very focused," Jorgensen said. "He has really enjoyed playing this year and that really made a difference in his game."

Kemether has been very versatile for the Tigers this season, playing every position for playoff-bound Tokay. Jorgensen said Kemether is the Tigers' first option and the team's offense centers around him.

Cha Cha Morisaki is also having a solid senior campaign, making blocks left and right and helping the Tigers earn a playoff berth.

"I felt she was the best goalie in the league so she deserved to be on the first team," said Tokay girls head coach Nate Varosh.

Herrington, who also made the TCAL all-first team last year as a freshman, plays shutdown defense when she needs to for Tokay, but can also be looked to as a goal scorer. Varosh is expecting even greater things from her in the future.

"She is one of the best players in the league," Varosh said. "When we win league next year, she will be the MVP."

St. Mary's, who won both the boys and girls league titles, took TCAL's top honors. Ram Tucker Carlson was named the Most Valuable Player for the boys and Marena O'Leary was picked as the girls MVP.

The Rams also had Matt Kidwell, Bo Delange and Taylor Steness selected to the boys first team all-TCAL, while Sonora's Josh Martin and Christian Personius also earned spots. Completing the girls all-league first squad were Rams Ali Gibson, Jessica Burdge and Tess Delange, as well as West's Jenifer Porter and Sonora's Brook Bates.

Both Tiger teams will be back in the pool in first-round Sac-Joaquin Section playoff action this weekend at Johansen High School. The Tokay boys will face Davis at noon on Saturday while the Tokay girls will take on Los Banos at 11 a.m. on Friday.
