Why was USMC banner stolen?

Wednesday, November 4, 2009 6:18 AM PST

It's such a shame — and just in time for Veterans Day, too. People never fail to disappoint, do they?

When my eldest son left for the Marine Corps last year, I, as a very proud parent, invested in and displayed a very nice USMC banner on my front porch, hanging right over our home's big front window. Last week, I came home to have my husband ask if I noticed something missing out front.

Now, I realize any time we display any type of decoration outside of our homes, we run the risk of theft. It has happened to us before. As I prepared the banner for hanging when it came last year, I considered the same risk. But I reassured myself, thinking, "Who would steal a Marine Corps banner?" Anyone who would want one or need one would be somehow associated with the USMC, and if they are in the Corps, retired from the Corps or have friends or family in the Corps, they would understand the values it represents: honor, courage and commitment. They just would not steal it.

It just made sense. Or so I thought. Like I said, people never fail to disappoint; it was ripped right off the cord it hung from.

So if you notice someone displaying a nice, red USMC seal banner, about two feet by three feet, I cannot ask you to suspect them, of course, but instead merely say a quick prayer for our U.S. troops all around the world as they serve us so bravely. God bless them. That is, after all, what the Corps and the banner is all about.

" Adenna

I could not have put those feelings into words any better than what you did here. I was beyond disappointed when our USMC flag came up missing on Veteran's Day. I had Shelby go out to make sure the flags were in their proper position and she came back inside and said Mom where is the USMC flag? I can't remember the last time I was that disappointed, hurt and offended all rolled in one. I cannot believe someone would stoop so low. I will replace my flag but the feeling of disappointment and violation was awful. I hope that whoever took both of our flags will someday grow a conscience. We are very proud of all our troops but I like you also hold a very special place in my heart for the USMC. Something like this is not only hurtful to the friends and families of our service members but just plain disrespectful. Thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention. "

" Thanks Lodi Sam. I will shoot you an e-mail from the office tomorrow and we can get to work on this. I figure it is the Marine Logo with some type of saying or slogan. Really the logo is the critical piece of art we need.

Adenna - Let us know what was on the banner or what you would like on the new one. What colors, etc.

Thank you to all our troops, past and present. "All gave some, some gave all". "

" jay dubb and sam, I just came back to see if there were any new comments on the articles/letters and saw your posts.

You two are the cat's meow and show what "community" is all about!

I'm both touched and impressed with your response to Ms. Streyle's letter.

Way to go! "

" jay dubb, my company does indoor art reproduction.
Small world. I hope together we can really recreate the banner their family lost. "

" I work at a printing company and we can produce a vinyl banner for you to replace the one that was stolen, free of charge. If you can get me some type of artwork or let me know what specifically was on the banner I would be happy to replace it for you.

I will follow the comments here and just respond if you are interested.

God bless all our troops! "

" Adenna, your thief will get his own - bad karma!

Mrs Nellie & I have watched your son Taylor grow from a young man before high school, into a self confident water polo player, working at the grocery store, and now a proud Marine. Yet he always looked straight at us and said "Hello." "
