Big win for Allen Baroni in reclamation election
Incumbent Allen Baroni had overwhelming support — at least among large property owners — in Tuesday's election to maintain and repair the Mokelumne River levees in the Thornton area.
Baroni, who has served on the Reclamation District 348 board, defeated Joe Pineda by a 4,127-68 vote. In the reclamation district, property owners were given one vote for each acre they own, so if they own 100 acres, they get 100 votes.
Pineda said last week that he didn't expect to win because his support was generally from people who own smaller parcels. Forty-five ballots were cast, according to election inspector Sharon Stokes.
Pineda ran on the platform that the election should be based on one person-one vote, not on acreage. He was also critical of the polling place being open only between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., which meant that people who work out of town couldn't vote. There was no provision for absentee ballots.
