Athlete of the Week
Sydney Olagaray helps add to Flames' tradition
Accomplishment: Lodi High sophomore Sydney Olagaray placed first with a time of 19 minutes, 40 seconds to help the Lady Flames capture their seventh straight San Joaquin Athletic Association championship last Friday at the league meet in Stockton.
Olagaray sprinted past Lincoln's Angie Martinez in the final stretch for the victory.
Family: Diego and Cyndi Olagaray, parents; one brother.
Favorite sport: Distance running on the track and field team, said Olagaray, who competes in the 800, 1600 and 3200.
"It's like a family and I like running multiple events."
Favorite athlete: Cross country teammate Tommy Lomeli, who won the SJAA boys meet last Friday.
"He just amazes me," Olagaray said. "He runs well every race. I really look up to him in our training."
Favorite hobbies: Going to the beach, tubing, water skiing, running and traveling.
Favorite subject: Science, especially biology.
Dream car: Aston Martin.
Dream vacation: Africa, and Olagaray says her family will be vacationing there this Christmas.
Favorite local restaurant(s): Andre's Cafe and Pietro's. Her favorite dish is the bacon burger and fries at Andre's and the fettucini romano at Pietro's.
Best sports moment: Qualifying for sections in the 3200 last year despite having been ill and missing a week of practice leading up to the race.
Worst sports moment: During a qualifier for the Stanford Invitational Olagaray said she started cramping at the half-mile point of the three-mile race. It was painful, but she did qualify.
Plans: To attend a four-year school in California, preferably Stanford or UCLA. Olagaray said she'll keep running if she receives a scholarship.
The Athlete of the Week is selected by the News-Sentinel sports staff. Nominations are gladly accepted. Olagaray will receive a T-shirt courtesy of Lodi Sporting Goods for being selected.
