Lodi's Marissa Hinchman keeps cool, advances to Northern California golf championships
Marissa Hinchman reached the 18th hole at The Reserve at Spanos Park in body only. Mentally, she was still a few holes behind.
Hinchman was playing the 16th hole of her shotgun start at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament, and at 1-over on the back nine she began rehashing missed opportunities. The lack of focus cost her as she found the water on the second shot of the par-4 hole.
That's when Hinchman decided to change her mindset and the momentum swung back into her favor. Hinchman hit a 12-foot birdie to salvage a bogey and went on to shoot a 75 and advance to next Monday's Northern California championships at Almaden Country Club in San Jose.
"I'm super excited," said Hinchman, who is vying to become the first Flame to reach the state championships since Nicole Ferrero in 2005.
"I just brought myself back and didn't get angry," Hinchman said of hitting in the water on the 18th. "I told myself if I could just get bogey and move on. I birdied the next hole."
Lodi coach Tara Staal said Hinchman did a tremendous job of keeping her composure.
"She hung in there really well. As a sophomore to shoot 75 and to onto NorCals is incredible. It will be nice to see where she stacks up."
In the teams standings, Lodi placed eighth out of 13 teams with a 477.. St. Francis ran way with the title with a 373. Oak Ridge (437) and Christian Brothers (446) earned the final team qualifying berths for NorCals. St. Mary's was sixth (461).
Marissa Mar of St. Francis and Shawnee Martinez of Enochs both shot 71 to earn low-medalist honors.
Martinez earned the first of four individual qualifying spots, followed by Granite Bay's Paige Lee (72), Center's Sagee Palavivatana (73) and Hinchman.
"My goal was to make it to Masters this year and I did," Hinchman said. "Right now my focus is to get through NorCals and make it to state. That would be amazing."
Galt junior Riley Sexton also had a strong individual performance on Monday, shooting a 77 to miss qualifying by only two shots.
"She had a couple of bad holes that probably cost her from going," Galt coach Janice Williams said. "But she'll get back to work and try to make it next year."
Rounding out Lodi's scoring on Monday were Coby Kooyman (85), Danielle Aldrich (103), Courtney Schmidt (116), Sarah Boles (98) and Brittany Range (124).
