Galt man dies after weekend Highway 12 crash
A Galt motorcyclist died Sunday on Highway 12 when an oncoming driver veered across the center line in thick fog, according to the California Highway Patrol. The other driver also died.
Eric P. Bell, 29, was traveling west around 5:20 a.m. east of Highway 160 when an oncoming burgundy Chevrolet Silverado crossed the center line. The truck hit Bell's black Yamaha motorcycle head-on, CHP Officer Michael Bradley said.
The force of the crash sent Bell through the windshield into the truck's cab.
The Chevy's driver, identified by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office as 61-year-old Carl W. Stamm, of Rio Vista, died at the scene.
The collision closed a section of Highway 12 between 160 and the Jackson Slough Bridge.
Though the truck came to rest in a field off the north side of Highway 12, the entire road was closed for about five hours.
Investigators will await coroner's toxicology reports, but there was no indication at the scene of alcohol involvement, Bradley said. Bell was wearing a helmet and Stamm was wearing his seat belt.
