The McNair High School sophomore hit by a car while crossing West Lane on her way to the North Stockton campus Friday morning has died.

Ebonee Smith, 15, was flown from St. Joseph's Medical Center in Stockton to University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. She was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon, according to district officials, but died over the weekend.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family," Principal James Davis wrote in an e-mail to school staff Monday morning. "I talked with her mother a few short moments ago, and they are having a difficult time. Please keep an eye on our students and send them to the counseling office if they are having difficulty."

Smith was reportedly not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident.

" This is a terrible tragedy I feel so bad for this family being a mother my self I could not even imagine the pain that this Childs parents are going threw right now .yes this child made a mistake I have made many in my life as a child and an adult I just got lucky and any one who can not say the same. “ total bull sh!^ “
When this school first went up I thought to my self what a bad place to put any school people use west lane like is the auto bond in Germany. This road has dangers even in a car not to mention to put a school with children of any age there now that it is there the speed limit should be now more than 30 mile per hour in this area and 20 if student are leaving school for lunch or home and when they arrive.
My heart goes out to this family. "

" Having worked for LUSD for almost 20 years, I have seen first hand the ignorance and arrogance of high school students when in the proximity of automobiles. To say that they exhibit all the signs of invincibility is an understatement. Sadly, and unfortunately, the rules and reality of life prevailed in this case, and a young person lost their life. If any lesson can be learned from this tragedy, I sincerely hope it is that personal responsibility and the need for self preservation takes priority over the appearance of “cool” to your friends and peers. A tragedy? Yes. An opportunity to learn? Yes, but unfortunately, one that will all too soon be forgotten and repeated. "

" Dogs: Please e-read my post. I said "possibly fatal mistake". Of course, if it had been a fatal mistake, you would no longer be here with us.
Sorry about my outburst but I am usually appalled by the lack of compassion in these comment boards when a family suffers a terrible loss. Of course she should have been in the crosswalk. That's not the point. I have lived in Lodi for decades and raised my children here. I know this town is full of kind and compassionate people but unfortunately few of them post here.
One of my daughters was ticketed for jaywalking on Pacific Ave while she was a student at Delta and another daughter was ticketed and I had to go to juvenile court because of a dangerous joyriding incident during her lunch at Lodi High. They are both responsible adults now but the teen years are fraught with dangers because teens tend to believe they are immortal.
This poor girl's family deserves our compassion and respect, not flippant remarks--even though the remark is true. "

" napa valley chef . What is insensitive about that.. The truth hurt?? It’s pure
Speculation that had the person used the crosswalk they would still be alive.
Regardless the young girl is dead and two families are forever changed and
not in a good way. Chef?? Mac Donald’s ?? "

" A child dies and all you can do is offer up a smug insensitive comment about crosswalks? If you can't see the shame in that, then there's really nothing left to say here. "

Gator wrote on Nov 2, 2009 8:05 PM:

" Like Dogs said that is what the cross walk is for. Now the person who was driving the car will live with that for the rest of their life. So you see wise
guys more than one life has been ruined…Shake your head and see if it
rattles… "

" weezer, your very good a splitting hairs. I can`t recall the last time I saw anybody walking on I-5. Or are you talking about horse and buggie days. "

" dogs4you, no i didn't have my last statement backwards.

Roads are made for people.
Cars are made only to move people faster on the road. "

" Reader from Stockton, check your DMV book again, the pedestrian doesn`t always have the right a way and must yield to traffic at certain times.

Tazz even though you are being sarcastic, no I have never made a fatal mistake. You call me a boor, got your attention.

Weez, you sure you don`t have your last sentence backwards. If so, you have the cars driving on the sidewalk. "

LodiReaderFromStockton wrote on Nov 2, 2009 3:59 PM:

" While yes we should always use the crosswalks obviously she didn't. But last I heard in the DMV rules the pedestrian has the right of way.

My heart goes out to this young lady's family and to the driver who hit her because it was an accident and I'm sure they are feeling hurt and sadness over this also. "

weezer wrote on Nov 2, 2009 3:54 PM:

" dogs4you, inasmuch as it's extremely annoying to see people not in crosswalks especially in high speed roads like West Lane, not to mention the danger they pose not just for themselves but to drivers like us,
we just have to give way to them.
Roads are made for people, not for cars. "

" I guess that you, Mr Dog, are perfect! (I've seen your picture on the front of a church!) You have never made a possibly fatal mistake, nor have any of your loved ones done such a thing. In case you didn't notice, I'm being sarcastic and more than a little horrified at your insensitivity. This was a 15 year old child who just died because she made a fatal error. You've never jaywalked,of course--never done anything to put yourself or any one else at risk due to human error.(oops, forgot, you don't make mistakes.) I think this thread should be stopped right now before any more insensitive Lodi boors cause more pain to the family of this young girl. "
