Calm, collected and confident, Tokay's Nikola Polcerova pulled off the upset on Friday.

The Tigers' No. 1 singles player and foreign exchange student from Slovakia defeated St. Mary's Christiana Ferrari 6-4, 6-0 to win the Tri-City Athletic League singles championship at In-Shape Sport West Lane Club in Stockton.

On the other side of town, Lodi's Anna Adams and Jacque Lord collaborated for their second straight San Joaquin Athletic Association doubles title at the In-Shape Sports Marina Club.

Ferrari, the league's top seed who went undefeated in the TCAL regular season, beat Polcerova twice in the regular season. Each match Polcerova learned more about Ferrari and the margin of victory shrunk from the first to the second showdown. On Friday, the result flipped.

"I think that she was pretty nervous and I was in good shape," Polcerova said. "I just tried to stay focused and not make many mistakes and that's what I did."

Polcerova will now advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section singles tournament as the TCAL's top seed. Ferrari, who is a former St. Anne's student, is also headed to sections.

Alexa Abdallah and Andrea Ikeda made it to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by West.

The singles section tournament will also be held at In-Shape Sport West Lane Club in Stockton Nov. 12-13.

Adams and Lord cruised through the SJAA tournament. After a first-round bye, they defeated Tracy's No. 2 squad 10-5, topped Lincoln's No. 2 doubles team 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals and then beat Tracy's top squad 6-2, 6-3 to earn another set of trophies.

"It's a big win for them. It's great because they went back to back," Lodi head tennis coach Dennis Sebastian said. "Even though we don't have a streak anymore, we are going to our 11th straight section playoffs."

Earlier this year, Lodi snapped its 10-year long league match winning streak, as well as its 10 straight years of league championships.

The Lodi doubles team of Audrey Simon and Emily Bingham were also in action on Friday. They defeated Bear Creek 10-0 in the first round before being knocked out by Tracy's top team 10-6 in the quarterfinals.
