Holly Rankin wins again as Tokay Tigers pull off upset for share of cross country title

Holly Rankin's road to redemption got off to a beautiful start and Karey Harty's 50th birthday celebration got off to a bang on a gorgeous fall day on Friday at Stockton's Oak Grove Park.

Running under clear, sunny skies around a picturesque lake in near perfect running conditions, Rankin started off her bid for a trip to the state championships with a first-place finish at the Tri-City Athletic League championships. Tokay's varsity boys team followed with the upset of the day, knocking off St. Mary's to claim a share of the TCAL championship.

With smoke pouring from the grills in the picnic area and runners passing time by throwing a football or nestling under shady oaks, it made for one big Harty party.

Harty turns 50 on Monday and her two sisters came into town to celebrate the milestone birthday. With the sisters in attendance, Tokay's boys got the party started.

"It's awesome," Harty, wearing a big smile and a colorful tiara with the words "It's my 50th birthday" inscribed on it, said after the Tigers shocked the Rams.

"I'm so proud," said Harty, who added that she challenged the squad to work harder after the Rams handed the Tigers their only league loss in dual meets.

With winning the TCAL meet their only realistic chance at a league title, the Tigers increased their training, doing double workouts during their recent two-week break.

Tokay runner Cory Park, who also plays baseball for the Tigers, says it was a new concept to him.

"I hadn't done that before and at first I found it a bit intimidating," said Pack, who explained that the team met in the early mornings to run sprints at the school's track and then convened again in the afternoon for three-mile runs.

With sweat running down his face following Friday's race, Park said "It was worth it. In this sport you get out of it what you put into it."

Harty added: "Their hard work paid off."

Zack Leffler paced the Tigers, placing second in the three-mile race with a time of 16 minutes, 57 seconds. He was followed by Pack (4th, 17:05), Patrick Johnson (17:27), Luis Castillo (17:28) and Jaime Maturino (17:36).

St. Mary's Sebastian Charles was the individual winner with a time of 16:42.

For Rankin, it was a race just to get to Friday's meet. The senior was participating in Homecoming festivities at school and arrived at Oak Grove Park only 10 minutes prior to her race.

"I was still able to get loose but I would have been less nervous had I got her sooner," said Rankin, who is determined not to be slowed down in her pursuit of a state berth.

Rankin was in second place and 400 meters away from the finish line and a trip to state when an injury derailed her last year. She came up one spot shy of state as a sophomore.

"That definitely motivated me," Rankin said shortly after crossing the finish line in first place on Friday with a time of 19:02. It was her second straight league title.

"It was a good race," Rankin said. "I wanted to 18 (minutes), but it's OK."

Rankin's teammate, Holly Kroll, was second with a time of 19:26. Also placing for the Lady Tigers were Samantha Hanchey (18th, 24:25), Daisy Baltazar (25th, 25:42) and Michelle Bua (33rd, 27:53).

St. Mary's wrapped up the team championship with a first-place finish.
