Loss makes league title tough tow for Tigers

Marced Kelly returned a kickoff 85 yards for a score and tight end Foloi Vae caught a 19-yard scoring pass for an insurance touchdown as Edison pushed across a pair of second-half touchdowns to shock Tokay 20-7 on Friday night at the Grape Bowl.

According to Tiger head coach Louis Franklin, it was the play of his special teams that hurt Tokay.

"We made some mistakes on the special teams tonight and that was the big difference in the game," Franklin said. "You cannot give up a kickoff return for a touchdown and then fumble a snap on a punt against a good team like Edison and expect to win."

The Vikings (5-3, 3-0 Tri-City Athletic League) won their fifth consecutive game while the Tigers (6-2, 2-1 TCAL) suffered their first league loss.

Edison head coach Andre Horace said his team expected a tough, physical game from Tokay and also said the play of his special teams was huge.

"That was a great game. I felt we controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball tonight," Horace said. "Obviously, we got some big plays from our kickoff return team and then Vae broke a bunch of tackles on that touchdown reception. That was huge. He is a big boy and is tough to bring down."

Both teams battled through a scoreless first quarter and a pass interference penalty on Tigers defensive back Nico Antolin gave the Vikings a first down on the Tokay 26-yard line late in the second quarter. A 11-yard run by Edison tailback Lucky Gonzalez set up a touchdown on a 4-yard quarterback sneak by Edward Chavez to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead at halftime after the 2-point try failed.

Defense and field position dominated the first half as the Tigers gained just 80 yards of total offense while Edison had only 69 yards. Both teams also had a pair of turnovers, with each fumbling once. Chavez was intercepted by Tokay defensive back Gabe Ramirez and Tiger quarterback Seth Siddle-Mitchell returned the favor by throwing a pick to Viking defensive back Ruben Ruvalcaba.

The Vikings fumbled the second half kickoff which led to a Ramirez fumble recovery, and coupled with a personal foul against Edison, gave Tokay a first down at the Viking 30-yard line. Siddle-Mitchell then ripped off a 24-yard scamper to the Edison 5-yard line and a subsequent penalty against the Vikings on a horse-collar tackle gave the Tigers a first-and-goal at the 2-yard line.

Patrick McCarthy then bulled over for a touchdown two plays later and Brett Rivers' point after try was good to put Tokay up 7-6. But the Tigers lead lasted just 10 seconds.

Kelly then took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and then ran the 2-point conversion in himself on the next play to put the Vikings back on top 14-7 as the third quarter ended.

A fumbled snap by Tokay punter Esteban Chavez on fourth down on the Tigers next offensive series led to an Edison touchdown when Vae hauled in a 19-yard pass from Edward Chavez to give Edison a 20-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Vikings defense then stiffened the rest of the way to hold on for the win.

The Tigers also hurt themselves with 12 penalties for 75 yards, including a holding penalty that wiped out a 19-yard touchdown catch by Joey Hohn on a pass from Siddle-Mitchell late in the final stanza.
