Prayer has been used in govt. for over 200 years

Thursday, October 29, 2009 6:20 AM PDT

Since the 1790s, the United States Federal Government has employed Christian chaplains in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

All of the U.S. chaplains have been "Christians." When the Congress begins its daily sessions, they do so not with a moment of silence, but with an audible prayer by a Christian minister. This practice has been in place for over 200 years! Plus, our tax dollars pay the chaplains' salary!

We have written prayers spoken by most of our U.S. Presidents down through history. Many presidents have called the entire nation to a day of prayer and fasting. Our government established Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday to give thanks to Almighty God. Presidents are sworn into office with their hand on the Bible. Even our state governments employ full-time Christian chaplains to be of service in our prisons.

What's the big stink about a one-minute prayer before a City Council meeting in Lodi? I guess those who are opposed to prayer did not do very well in their eleventh-grade U.S. History class.

" Is praying really that necessary in the first place, I believe the CC and everyone that speaks before the meeting asks for guidance, with the turnoil the CC and Lodi is in at the present time, I would think you could skip praying and get on to the business at hand as praying has done little or nothing to improve the situation.

The "big stink" preacher is, that Lodi is going against its own rules to disavow any praying before its meeting, and makes me wonder what a new CC will do to reverse course on the subject of praying now, and you know it will come up as to how they would vote before an election, or change the bylaws of the city. " o.O Its been a long while for me, but I remember my US History class like it was yesterday; there was never any mention of prayer in our Government.

However, when I was in 10th Grade World History, we learned about why we have in the constitution "a separation of church and state." *sticks tongue firmly in cheek* "

Is this an appropriate and respectful public comment by a pastor? "

" I am soooo confused. Lodi wants to declare its self a Christian community with prayer before its City Council meeting... and in the same breath wants to force Downtown Lodi Merchants to open and work on the Lord's Day.

Oohh... and then cut bus service on Sunday for church goers.

What's wrong with this? "
