Bargain basement deals: City of Lodi to hold first big furniture sale
Do-it-yourselfers, bargain hunters and garage sale junkies might find some deals Nov. 7 at Lodi's first large-scale sale of city furniture.
Items for sale include about 25 metal desks, 10 wooden desks, 10 file cabinets, 25 tables, 50 metal lockers, 15 wood or metal shelves and 25 chairs and couches.
Stored in the city's former fleet shop, the desks and shelves run from gently used to falling apart, and many of the chairs and couches are burnt orange or drab brown. Some of the lockers, which used to be in the old police building, still have football playing card stickers attached.
The sale will be from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 7 at the city's Municipal Services Center and will be cash-and-carry. With the cheap prices, Public Works Director Wally Sandelin said it's not an attempt to make money, but rather an opportunity for the city to unload extra stuff.
"We don't expect to generate millions," Sandelin said. "If someone can put this to use, then great, rather than throwing it away for scrap metal. It's not going to solve our budget deficit, that's for sure."
Prices for the items are $10 for metal desks, $25 for wooden desks, $10 file cabinets, $10 to $20 for tables, $5 for metal lockers, $10 for shelving units, and between $5 to $20 for couches and chairs.
Even if people don't want the item as is, some of the materials could be used for other projects, said Dennis Callahan, the city's fleet and facilities manager.
"An old oak desk might not be worth much as is, but you could use this oak for something else," Callahan said while pointing at a heavy thick desk.
Many of the chairs could be reupholstered, and Callahan said the lockers could be used for storage in garages. The city ended up collecting the items over the years as different departments have moved buildings, Sandelin said.
The police department left behind furniture when it moved into its new station, the library got rid of some items during its remodel, and the finance department had to downsize when moving into its new building behind City Hall, Sandelin said.
The city sent out a list of all the items to see if the other departments could reuse the furniture, Sandelin said. Then, the city tried to sell the items online but realized there wasn't a market for the items since they are so old.
Any items the city does not sell will be scrapped for recycling or disposed of as trash. Public Works management staff will work the sale at no cost to the city. Any sale money will go into the General Fund, which is the city's main account to pay for services like fire, police and the library.
Besides giving residents a deal, Sandelin said the city will also clear out the old fleet shop. He said the city's management still needs to decide what is the best use for the facility, which was replaced by a new vehicle and maintenance shop that opened in May of this year.
He said several divisions of Public Works are interested in using the building to move certain operations inside.
