Lodi Flames win second straight division golf crown
For the second-straight year, the Lodi Flames girls golf team is the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South champions.
Sophomore Marissa Hinchman shot an 82 and freshman Coby Kooyman turned in a round of 87 to lead the Flames to a divisional victory at Merced Country Club on Monday. Lodi carded a team total of 486, good enough to edge St. Mary's by three strokes for the title.
"That is a really big win. We lost to St. Mary's in a preseason match earlier this year and then we beat them in this tournament," said Lodi head coach Tara Staal. "It just shows how much they have improved this year. They played really well."
Enochs finished third overall and will join the Flames and the Rams in the next round as all three teams advanced to the Section Masters tournament on Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Following Hinchman and Kooyman for the San Joaquin Athletic Association champion Flames were Danielle Aldrich with a 100, Sarah Bowles with a 105 and Courtney Schmidt with a 112.
Although Tokay didn't qualify for the tournament as a team, Maggie MacFarlane and Kaite Woznick represented the Tigers with a 106 and 127 respectively.
Outside of the top three teams, the top individuals from Divisionals will also head to Masters including Johansen's Christine Uhalde, who won the tournament with a 74, West's Alice Trisri (90), Tracy's Jennifer Kim (91), Turlock's Stephannie Hammell (92), West's Belinda Mayhan (93) and Modesto's Summer Uhrik (93).
Despite having its two top players be underclassmen, Lodi has returned to its status of being on of the Section's top teams. This year the Flames won their second consecutive SJAA title and sixth in the last seven years.
Last year, Lodi finished eighth at Masters. They are looking for a higher finish this time around.
"Last year I called them the little team that could and this year they are too," Staal said. "When it really counts, they step up to plate and get it done."
The Section's top teams and individuals from Divisions I through V will compete in Monday's Masters tournament, which has a shotgun start time that is yet to be announced.
