Daniel Faith chosen as 'Boss of the Year'
Daniel Faith, principal at Manlio Silva School in North Stockton, was surprised Friday with this year's "Boss of the Year" award.
He was chosen by the local California School Employee Association chapter.
Faith was principal at Lockeford Elementary School, but moved to Manlio Silva, which he helped open in 2005.
He was nominated for the annual district-wide honor by his secretary, Sandra Cunningham, who called him an "awesome" administrator and leader.
"He makes sure everyone who works at Silva knows they are a valued part of the team," she wrote in her nomination letter. "Whether it is certificated or classified staff, Dan shows great respect to all and has included all of the Silva team in the success story at Silva. Dan has a way of leading with a strong hand while allowing others to come alongside of him with their strengths to build a strong team and school."
Earlier this month, CSEA chose Karen Meyer as its 2009 Employee of the Year. She was recognized publicly at Oct. 6 school board meeting with a plaque presented by union president Peter Geraldizo.
Last year, Vinewood Elementary Principal Kathleen "Kitsy" Smith received the district's "Boss of the Year" recognition.

District welcoming public input on budget
Lodi Unified School District is preparing for a multimillion-dollar deficit for next school year and is seeking public input at a meeting next week.
Lodi administrators are currently estimating an additional $20 million-plus must be realized before the 2010-11 school year budget is passed in June. The deficit is due partly to balancing the current year's budget with one-time federal stimulus funding.
Superintendent Cathy Nichols-Washer has said there will surely be more layoffs in 2010-11 than in the current year.
The public forum is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 4 in the Mamie Starr Performing Arts Theatre at Ronald E. McNair High School, 9550 Ronald E. McNair Way, Stockton.

Science Olympiad applications available
The San Joaquin County Office of Education invites all public and private county schools to participate in this year's Science Olympiad. There are three levels of competition: Division A2 for grades 3-6, Division B for grades 6-9, and Division C for grades 9-12.
Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events.
Events require knowledge of science facts, concepts, process skills and science applications.
The A2 regional competition will be held in Stockton at Ronald E. McNair High School on March 27, and the B and C regional competitions will be held at University of the Pacific on March 6.
Intents to participate are due on or before Dec. 4. To download registration forms, visit www.sjcoe.org/sae/olympiadbc.aspx. For more information, contact Meredith Davis at 468-9030.
