Tokay Tigers fall to rival St. Mary's Rams in overtime heartbreaker
After coming back from a three-goal deficit to force overtime in Wednesday's Tri-City Athletic League showdown against St. Mary's, the Tokay girls water polo team nearly pulled off the upset after taking two separate leads in OT.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, who were up 7-6 after the first 3-minute overtime period, the Rams scored two unanswered goals in the final OT frame to edge Tokay 8-7 and move closer to the TCAL title.
The Tokay boys squad also fell to the Rams on Wednesday night by a score of 8-0. Sam Walker made five saves in the net for the Tigers.
The Tokay girls (5-2 TCAL), who already secured a playoff berth and will finish no worse than second in league, challenged St. Mary's all game long. It was a completely different game then when the Rams (6-0 TCAL) beat the Tigers 6-2 earlier this season.
"We had zero offense last time. We couldn't produce anything," Tokay head coach Nate Varosh said. "You can tell by the score this one was different."
St. Mary's jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the second quarter before Charis Mahoney got the Tigers on the board. It wasn't until the third period however, that Tokay really got going. Sophomore Taitum Herrington scored three goals in less than two minutes to momentarily give Tokay a 4-3 advantage before the Rams tied the game up going into the fourth frame.
Herrington struck again to start the fourth, on a perfect pass by Mimi Morisaki, who recorded several assists in the game, and Tokay went up 5-4. Ram Katie O'Leary tied the game up with a goal with 3:29 left, but Tokay goalie Cha Cha Morisaki made numerous saves to help the Tigers send the game to OT.
"Taitum and Cha Cha kept us in this game. She made some great saves," Varosh said.
In OT, Mimi Morisaki and Sydney Iturraran both scored for Tokay, putting the Tigers up both times. Cha Cha Morasaki made a tremendous one-armed save to help the Tigers enter the final three OT minutes with a 7-6 lead. Then St. Mary's scored twice in the final 1:44 to win the game.
"We couldn't score as much as we wanted because they had a great goalie," St. Mary's head coach Berrie deLange said.
Tokay will wrap up its league season on Monday at West. The Tiger boys (5-3 TCAL) will do the same and, with a win, will clinch second place in league and earn a playoff berth.
