Your help needed with Mickey's vet bill
This letter is meant for dog lovers only.
Being a dog lover myself, I started a nonprofit rescue last summer, and have had a heartwarming year rescuing dogs from the shelter and finding forever homes.
Last week, a homeless man called me — his dog had been hit by a car, and the vet said the bill would be close to $1,000. Frankly, I wasn't interested. Homeward Bound of San Joaquin County had a balance of $250. I put him off, but he called back, crying this time. He obviously loved this dog like a child, and even though homeless, he had made sure Mickey had all his shots and was neutered.
So I gave in. I took Mickey straight to my vet, who thought he might be able to save the leg. But in surgery he discovered there was no bone marrow. The damage was too severe, the interlude between the accident and the operating table too long.
He had to amputate. He wouldn't even consider euthanasia. "It's a nice dog," he pleaded. "And he's very young — not yet two." Mickey is a gentle soul. Despite being in great pain, he hobbles outside to do his business rather than soil his kennel and wags his tail whenever he's petted.
But now here is where all you dog lovers come in. Can you please help pay Mickey's vet bill? I will send you a tax deductible receipt, but best of all, when Mickey is all healed up and dashing about on 31/2 legs, you'll be proud to know you helped make it happen. Homeward Bound SJC, P.O.
