Accomplishment: Despite the rain and unfavorable conditions in Monday's San Joaquin Athletic Association girls golf tournament, Lodi High sophomore Marissa Hinchman was able to play through it and record an 82 to win the individual title at Swenson Park Golf Course in Stockton.

The 15-year-old helped the Flames win the overall SJAA team title for the second straight season. With the win, Hinchman and the Flames advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South tournament on Monday at Merced Country Club.

Hinchman said her short game was off and things weren't helped by the rain on Monday, but she was able to play smart to earn the victory.

Family: Parents Bruce and Hiromi; one brother and one sister.

Favorite sport: Golf. Hinchman has been playing for about five years. She said she loves everything about golf. "I love how you can't really predict anything," she said. "It is a fun sport overall."

Favorite athlete: "Definitely Tiger Woods, but I love Phil Mickelson because of how is going through everything and is still one of the best golfers in world," Hinchman said.

Favorite hobbies: Hanging out with friends and traveling to golf tournaments.

Favorite subject: Physics. "I like all the labs," Hinchman said. "They are really fun."

Best sports moment: Anytime she keeps her score under par. "It doesn't happen too often. I get close a lot, but then when it does happen, it's great," Hinchman said.

Worst sports moment: "I had one tournament and it was the worst day of my life," Hinchman said of a tournament in Monterey. "Nothing went straight. Everything was off."

Favorite golf course: La Costa in San Diego. "I played in a tournament down there and it is a really pretty course," she said.

Would like to meet: Tiger Woods. "I would definitely want to meet him and my future goal is to beat him," Hinchman said.

Dream car: A Range Rover or a Camaro.

Dream vacation: "I love going to Japan," Hinchman said. Hinchman has been to Japan multiple times to visit her family and has even played golf there with her grandma.

Favorite place to eat: Panera Bread or Juice It Up.

Plans: "I definitely want to play college golf and then hopefully go pro after college," Hinchman said, adding that her dream schools would be Cal, USC or Arizona State.

The Athlete of the Week is selected by the News-Sentinel sports staff. Nominations are gladly accepted. Hinchman will receive a T-shirt courtesy of Lodi Sporting Goods for being selected.
