Congress needs to exercise wisdom

Tuesday, October 20, 2009 6:30 AM PDT

An open letter to Rep. Jerry McNerney, Sen. Barbara Boxer and Sen. Dianne Feinstein:

I strongly urge you to avoid President Obama's pressure to immediately approve his version of the health care bill. Instead, I hope members of both the House and Senate will honor the responsibility voters have entrusted to you, and give yourselves the time you need to study all aspects of this huge undertaking.

Even if it takes months to consult with doctors, patients, lawyers and others, I hope and pray you will exercise the wisdom and common sense California voters have elected you to practice. The health care bill you create should be one you would want for yourself and your family.

Voters are angry, and there seems to be a growing fear of President Obama's determination to act as a dictator-commander instead of a thoughtful leader who is dedicated to upholding the sovereignty, individual freedoms, and the future of our country in accordance with our U.S. Constitution.

There is a widespread outcry against the arrogant, corrupt performances of many elected officials, and voters will hold them accountable. I wish you peace, wisdom, and courage to do the right thing.

" sparky, i wasn't spinning or trying to spin. Your statement can be interpretted both ways. I've read it several times, and, although I now understand your intention, I still come away with the same interpretation. Perhaps it could have been worded a bit different to genuinely reflect your intended meaning.

Perhaps it is because you seem to ignore the fact that many congress people that will vote in favor of this bill are doing so because that is what their consituents want them to do. I'm confident that there is a sizable number of congress people doing precisely that: supporting a bill that is supported by the majority of their constituents. In other words they are listening to their voters. Just because some voters are angry and yelling at townhalls does not mean that all voters are angry. Some are actually pleased with the health care reform effort. "

" I DO agree that Congress needs to exercise wisdom....because that key trait has become chronically atrophied in that organization. But what "gym" should they join to get back into shape? "

" Again, my point was that congress (democrat OR republican controlled) generally write and pass bills regardless of the concerns of the people they serve. That is just my opinion. "

" Jeff, I never stated or insinuated that all 300 million Americans agree with me on anything. Stop spinning. My opinion that I was making is that EVEN IF 300 million Americans were against this, the congress would pass it anyway. That is MY opinion, not fact. I realize that the country is split on this, as they are on most issues. I was never trying to act as if all 300 million people are for or against this. Where did I have this 'premise that all support me and my ideas'? Stop making things up. "

" what substance, like your inane belief that 300 million americans agree with you? different polls reflect different numbers, but all back up that the nation is divided on this issue, not singularly opposed to health care reform. in general, a sizable majority support a public option, and a majority support this bill. so, you need to abandon your premise that all support you and your ideas. therefore many people support those congressional views that differ from yours. "

" 'This is THEIR time'.

I had to correct that before the english teachers here pointed that out. They like to do that to avoid the actual substance of a post. "

" This bill is the crowning achievement of the democrat party. They have the president, the house and the senate. This is there time. It will only take about 300 congressmen/women to pass this. I believe that if these 300 people were told by all 300 million Americans that we didn't want their version of reform, they would still pass it with a smile on their face.

I have come to realize that they have zero concern for their constituents view on this matter. They have been waiting for years for this moment and they will let nothing, absolutely nothing, stand in their way. Not even the America people for which it is intended.

They don't listen to people in townhalls, they won't allow republicans to help write the bill, they are rushing it thru even though the American people are asking for the transparency we were promised by obama. This week, they are having closed door meetings to merge bills together....not one republican allowed in the room. What are they hiding from us? What are they afraid of us seeing? "

" I celebrate Obama's ACTION far more than the endless years of good 'ol boy cronyism that has been Politics as Usual in this country. Look where that has gotten us this last couple of decades.... "
