Trout at Pardee still biting

Thursday, October 15, 2009 6:31 AM PDT

The trout at Pardee are still biting both trolling and bait fishing.

Boaters are doing well at the buoy line and in the coves trolling either a nightcrawler very slow behind a worm wiggler or 2 feet behind a dodger.

Those with electric motors are trolling as slow as 1/2 mile per hour. Bank fishermen are throwing casting spoons or fishing under bobbers with crawlers or powerbait. This impoundment closes for the season on Sunday Oct. 25.

At Amador, trout plants have started with some very nice fish to over 5 pounds being planted. The fishing is very good for trout and the bank fishermen are catching more fish than the trollers. One of the best lures to use is the Crystal Bullet in ghost pearl color. Others are using wooly buggers and Berkley Trout worms.

In the Delta, fishing is still a bit slow although a fair number of striped bass were caught in the Rio Vista Bass Derby this past weekend. The best areas to fish are the Sacramento River near Broad Slough and near the shoal just west of Eddo's Harbor on the San Joaquin River.

Sturgeon fishing has picked up a bit in the past week or so. Quite a few fish are being caught in the area around Light 1 on the Sacramento River. Fish are also being caught in Broad Slough, West Island and Montezuma Slough.

Trout fishing is still slow at Camanche, although there are fish being caught near the narrows and down by Hat Island. The Excel spoon and Rapala F7 are the best lures to troll at this time. The best colors to use are fire tiger or chartreuse.

At Caples, the trout fishing is still very good. The trollers are doing very well on Excel spoons and Rapala lures using either the hot steel color or fire tiger. The bank fishermen are using casting spoons like the Magic Bullet and Kastmaster to catch limits.

Trout fishing is still slow at Melones but should pick up as soon as the water cools a bit.

Good luck and good fishing.
