Mother, son carjacked at Lodi grocery store

Gunman ditches ride after struggling to shift gears

Police are looking for a man who carjacked a woman and her 11-year-old son at gunpoint outside a Lodi store but apparently didn't know how to operate a manual transmission.

Neither victim was injured in the Tuesday night incident outside S-Mart Foods, 530 W. Kettleman Lane, according to Lodi police.

The two were loading groceries into a red Ford Focus around 11:30 p.m. when a car pulled up nearby and a passenger got out, Sgt. Mike Oden said.

The man, who wore a doctor's mask over the lower half of his face, pointed a black revolver at the woman's stomach and demanded her wallet and keys, Oden said. The woman had already placed them in her car, so the suspect grabbed her cell phone, pushed her away and jumped in the driver's seat of the car.

He accelerated but hit several curbs and didn't appear to know how to operate the car, the woman later told police.

Police found the car abandoned only a few blocks away. It was returned to the victim, but her purse and groceries had been stolen, Oden said.

The gunman was described as Hispanic, 5 feet 6 to 5 feet 8 inches tall, 200 to 220 pounds and wearing dark clothing. He arrived in a light blue or green four-door sedan.

Anyone with information may contact Lodi police at 333-6727, or anonymous calls may be made to Lodi-Area Crime Stoppers at 333-6771.

" Thank goodness nobody was hurt. I also enjoy going to stores when they are less crowded. Just a suggestion to anybody who goes out late, whether with children or not. If you are concerned, ask a person in the store to walk you to your car. They will do it, all you have to do is ask. Hope they catch the person, but the main thing is nobody got hurt. "

" Excellent points by T&C and Lodi Joe. Very good safety advise from T&C. One always thinks something like this happens to someone else and not them until it is too late. Thank you for the advice.
Good point about the difference between immigrant and illegal criminal. I never thought about it and always said illegal immigrant. I for one will never use that term again. "

Judge Colt and his jury of 6. Of coarse in my case it would 8 or 10 depending on which mag was in, lol.

I missed the post where Lodian wants to know who knows the GG.

GG is a fictional character. His last name is Noone. "

I think that is a ridiculous statement. This is about a crime, not the right time of day to shop. The Food 4 Less crime against a mother and child was at 9:22pm... was that too late too? Stop being ridiculous and attacking these women. They've already been attacked. Again, stop blaming the victim. "

" OrdinaryCit-

Actually the fact that he (dogs) would be carrying illegaly would have no bearing on wether it was murder or self-defense. It could very well be self-defense with a charge of unlawful ccw.

But either way, better to be an alive criminal than a dead victim. "

ordinarycitizen wrote on Oct 16, 2009 10:45 PM:

" dogs4you: hopefully you will have a concealed weapons permit before strapping on the .38, because if your scenario of dropping the hammer, etc. was real life, you would be committing murder and the scenario wouldn't have the outcome you are wanting. And if you did shoot off his leg, then you would be prosecuted for attempted murder and the bad guy would end up suing you, he would win and you would be sitting in prison for a good many years. "

" G. G. good point. However when your dead your done, no pain to remind yourself of your wrong doing. I`ll take that under consideration if and when the occation should arise. "

" I KNOW RE-INSTATE THE DRAFT and make all of them serve there time for their country just like the young men had to do back in the day. Maybe a little time in boot camp will keep them from being bored and they will learn something and then THEY won't have to go around hi-jacking cars and all the other things they do.Unfortunately,I am afraid the boys now days would be too SCARED to handle army life. They would rather pick on young women and children! Always shoot to kill, not mame.

A - You might miss a smaller target such as a leg.
B - The "perp" won't be around to sue you later.
C - Since the criminal is dead they only have your word to go by. "

" Although this is an awful crime, there are more appropriate times for a woman and a small child to shop,11:30 is not a time when a child of that age should be out and about. I agree with ckmom on that one. It is a comment about the story, and if you want to say this is not what the story is about, then let us all turn to how everyone is griping about the definition of an immigrant, LOL. This is about a crime, nothing else. "

" Only the bad guys pack heat, the good people just stand there and do nothing. Most people believe nothing like this will ever happen to them, until it happens. I have often thought of straping on my .38 when I go out at night, if needed, I would give a million dollars to see the look in the perps eyes before I dropped the hammer. Not to kill, but he will remember me every time he takes a step on his artificial leg. "

" Lodijoe-

"I do agree with you that guns are way too available."

Wrong. Just flat out wrong. You really should study your history concerning this subject. Prior to the Gun Control Act of 1934 the American public could order THRU THE MAIL anything they wanted, including a Thompson Submachine Gun. There were no restrictions whatsoever, many a school boy would order their first .22 rifle thru the Sears catalog and it would be sent straight to his home.

Further prior to the GCA of 1968 one could order any legal firearm delivered right to there home without so much as an age check, let alone a background check. My Dad also used to share stories about how his friends and him used to bring their .22 rifles TO SCHOOL for the school shooting team.

So you see it's not a GUN PROBLEM, it's a societal problem. "

I for one like to shop when it's late because the stores are less crowded. But I digress this crime is awful but to see hispanic and assume illegal just shows why I won't live in Lodi, bunch of racists who don't realize that American's commit crimes too. "

" I am with you LodiJoe:

There is no such a person as “illegal immigrant”.

A person can NOT be an “immigrant” and “in the USA illegally” simultaneously.

A person is an “immigrant” in the United States when they've met the legal requirements to be in the United States LEGALLY!

A person is a CRIMINAL in the United States when they have NOT met all of the legal requirements to be in the United States LEGALLY!

To call them “immigrants” is an insult to those tens of millions of honest true immigrants who played by the rules and did not become criminals by illegally coming to and staying in the United States.

Furthermore, to call them “immigrants”, and not call them criminals makes a mockery of the law. Why should anyone obey the laws when illegal aliens break the laws with impunity?

They are NOT “illegal immigrants”.

Call them what they are ------ CRIMINALS.

Illegal criminal aliens!

Having "Nino's" one after another just to make it harder to be deported is not a legal immigrant. Why can't they apply for citizenship like the rest of the world? "

"Please don't go out at night without a man, esp. at night. There is "No Shortage" of guys looking to prey on women and the elderly! Buy a pepper spray key chain and hold onto it going to and from a store. LOOK AROUND and see who is near you! Park close to the store! Carry a cell phone, and when in doubt SHOUT!

If someone looks "Suspicious" Go BACK into the store and wait for them to leave the parking lot. If they don't leave, Call 333-6727 and ask for a "Patrol Check of the parking lot yo check out that guy"! Just be careful please! "
